What types of toys/ books/ games will be distributed and why have you selected these items?

A: The focus is on selecting age appropriate educational toys, books and games that offer stimulation and learning opportunities. The selection has been done in consultation with the various beneficiaries based on the needs of the children in their care.

Why are you specifically focusing on orphaned and vulnerable children?

A: Cadbury Dairy Milk launched The Little Generosity Shop in 2019 to give orphaned and vulnerable children the precious gift of childhood. This was based on the insight that there are millions of orphaned and vulnerable children across South Africa, many of whom have never experienced having a toy of their own. Children remain the most vulnerable of our society. Now more than ever orphaned and vulnerable children need a reminder of hope and care, which is why Cadbury Dairy Milk remains committed to supporting these children wherever possible.

Why the focus on toys/books/games when essential items such as food are currently needed?

A: Play is vital to a child’s development, so important in fact, that the ‘UN Convention on the Rights of the Child’*, protects children’s rights to ‘’engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child’’. Children learn through play. According to experts, play provides a multisensory environment for children to process the world around them and as a society, we should make it a priority to provide the experiences and tools children need to thrive through learning.

A: Now more than ever orphaned and vulnerable children across South Africa need our help. Being confined with limited stimulation, including the assistance of volunteers and teachers, puts additional strain on their caregivers. Cadbury Dairy Milk remains committed to supporting these children by providing the engaging materials like educational toys, books and games that children need to fuel their thirst to learn.

Who are the beneficiaries and how have they been selected?

A: The beneficiaries consist of a range of NGOs dealing specifically with the care, and advocating on behalf, of orphaned and vulnerable children across South Africa. Cadbury Dairy Milk partnered with many of these beneficiaries during last year’s Generosity Project and are excited to be able to continue supporting these beneficiaries where they can. A full list of beneficiaries can be found on the website www.cadbury.co.za/generosity.

Where will the toys/books/games be sourced from?

A: The items for donation will be sourced from various reputable local suppliers and retailers that stock the age appropriate educational toys, books and games required by each beneficiary Organisation. The information received from the participating beneficiaries will be kept in the strictest confidence.

How will the toys/books/games be distributed?

A: Physical delivery will be actioned by a reputable distribution company, according to COVID-19 hygiene and safety guidelines.

Will these toys/books/games be distributed nationally?

A: Yes, the beneficiary Organisations identified span all nine provinces.

What is the age group of children that is being catered to?

A: Based on the information provided by the participating beneficiary Organisations, the age range of children that will be reached spans from preschool through to high school.

How many children will be reached through this initiative?

A: We have estimated that this phase of The Cadbury Dairy Milk Glass & a Half Project will reach approximately 10 000 children across the multiple beneficiaries.

Do consumers have a say in the type/ specific to one category of toy/book/game being purchased through their donation?

A: Due to the magnitude of the project, unfortunately consumers will not be able to indicate the type of toy, book or game that they would like a child to receive. Consumers can show their generosity by participating in this initiative and can rest assured that the toys, books and games selected will be educational in nature and have been specifically chosen to ensure that they are suited to the child receiving it.

Can we still donate pre-loved or new toys as we did last year?

A: While donations are always welcome, within the current environment and the risk of Covid-19 transmission as well as the local governments recommendation to not visit public places unnecessarily, Cadbury Dairy Milk has a responsibility to its consumers and the children receiving these gifts. To ensure that the toys, books and games collected are sourced and distributed under the strictest of safety and hygiene standards, the purchase of new toys, books and games is recommended.  Consumers who feel strongly about this initiative and would like to contribute towards the purchase of new toys, books and games are encouraged to do so through the purchase of participating Cadbury Dairy Milk bars.
